Archaeologists working in Pompeii have discovered a fresco depicting a silver tray with food items, including flat Focaccia bread, fruit, and a goblet of red wine, which could be a distant ancestor of pizza. The still life, dating back approximately 2,000 years, was found in the atrium of a residence connected to a bakery. The discovery offers a glimpse into ancient cuisine and highlights the enduring popularity of pizza, which originated as a "poor" dish in southern Italy and has now become a global phenomenon.
