Archaeologists have uncovered an extensive network of ancient cities in the Amazon rainforest dating back 2,500 years, featuring highly structured pre-Hispanic settlements with wide streets, long roads, plazas, and monumental platforms. The discovery, made using remote sensing technology called lidar, revealed over 6,000 platforms within a 600-square-kilometer area, suggesting advanced urban planning and engineering. This finding challenges the traditional view of the Amazon as a pristine forest and provides insight into the cultural and environmental legacy of Indigenous societies in the region.
