SpaceX's Successful Test Averts Potential 'Rock Tornado' During Starship Launch

SpaceX conducted an ignition test of its latest Starship booster, while simultaneously testing a new water deluge system on the launchpad. The test lasted 2.74 seconds, with four engines shutting down early. The water deluge system is designed to dampen the effects caused by igniting the rocket's engines during launch. SpaceX previously experienced damage to the launchpad during the first test flight of Starship, resulting in a "rock tornado" of debris. To prevent a similar event, steel plates have been installed underneath the launchpad. The company has not yet set a launch date for Starship's second test flight.
