Ancient DNA Unveils Unique Traits of Pre-Roman Picene Civilization

A genetic study led by Sapienza University of Rome has revealed that the pre-Roman Picene civilization, which thrived in east-central Italy between the ninth and third centuries BCE, had a surprisingly high prevalence of blonde hair and blue eyes. This genetic trait was more common among populations along the Adriatic coast, suggesting significant trade and cultural exchanges with other Mediterranean regions. The study highlights the complex interactions and demographic history of ancient Italy, indicating a cosmopolitan society that predated the Roman Empire.
