"Sun Umbrella Tethered to Asteroid: A Climate Change Solution"

Astronomer István Szapudi from the University of Hawaiʻi Institute for Astronomy has proposed a novel approach to mitigate climate change by using a solar shield combined with a tethered, captured asteroid as a counterweight. The tethered counterweight reduces the weight of the shield and counterweight to approximately 3.5 million tons, making it more feasible to launch from Earth. This approach brings the idea of solar radiation management into the realm of possibility, although it still presents challenges. Developing a lightweight and strong graphene tether is crucial for the success of this concept.
