Ancient Supereruptions Unearthed: Catastrophic Events in Europe Every 10,000-15,000 Years

Scientists have discovered "megabeds" at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, indicating a cycle of catastrophic events caused by ancient supervolcano eruptions that occur every 10,000 to 15,000 years. These megabeds, formed by volcanic material, were found near the coast of Italy and are separated by distinct layers of sediments. The oldest megabed formed after a massive eruption from the Campi Flegrei supervolcano 39,000 years ago, while the youngest was deposited by a less energetic eruption. The findings will help researchers better understand the risk posed by volcanoes in the region.
