Americans are less supportive of transgender athletes playing for teams aligned with their gender identity than they were two years ago, according to a Gallup poll. The survey found that 69% of Americans believe transgender athletes should be restricted to sports teams that conform with their birth gender, compared to 62% in 2021. The issue is seen more as one of competitive fairness than of transgender civil rights, with even Democrats divided on the issue. The poll also found that support for transgender athletes playing on teams aligned with their gender identity fell among those who knew a transgender person.
