Tainted Eye Drops Linked to Multiple Deaths and Vision Loss Cases, CDC Reports

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 81 cases of infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, including four deaths and 14 cases of vision loss, linked to tainted eyedrops. The bacteria is resistant to standard antibiotics, and most patients had used certain brands of eyedrops, leading to recalls of products from EzriCare and Delsam Pharma. Health inspectors found problems with how the drops were made and tested at the plant in India that made the eyedrops. Cases have been reported from 18 states.
