Expanding Mental Health Approaches: From Pills to Social Determinants

A recent study published in the Journal of Mental Health highlights the increasing diversity and richness of models used to understand mental health. The study identified 34 distinct models categorized into five groups: biological, psychological, social, consumer, and cultural. The dominance of biomedical models in the 1980s and 1990s has given way to a more diverse landscape of perspectives. The researchers emphasize the need for a holistic and inclusive approach that moves beyond traditional psychiatric and psychological lenses, incorporating insights from various disciplines and communities directly impacted by mental health issues.
