Houston Methodist Sets New Standard for Sepsis Identification and Outcomes

The CDC is now requiring hospitals to develop guidelines for the early identification and treatment of sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by infection. Houston Methodist Hospital has become a model for improving sepsis outcomes, implementing a successful sepsis identification program in 2008. Over 15 years, the hospital has reduced sepsis-related deaths by 35%. Sepsis can be difficult to identify due to its wide range of symptoms, including confusion, shortness of breath, high heart rate, fever, and extreme pain. Houston Methodist Hospital was recognized by the Global Sepsis Alliance for its efforts.
