Fall Prevention for Seniors: Expert Tips and Exercises

Martial arts instructors are teaching the over-65s how to avoid serious injuries if they take a tumble. Falling is a major concern for older adults, with one-third of people aged 65 and over falling at least once a year. Bad falls can have severe consequences, making them the second biggest cause of accidental injury deaths. However, the fear of falling can lead to reduced mobility and isolation, increasing the risk of falling. To break this cycle, a new program called "Finding your Feet" aims to teach older adults safe falling techniques based on judo. The program focuses on protecting the head, spreading the impact of the fall, landing on the side, and relaxing downwards. Additionally, exercises and supplements like vitamin D can help improve muscle strength and bone health to prevent falls.
