Increasing Recalls of Children's Fruit Pouches Due to Lead-Related Illnesses

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expanding its investigation into potentially lead-tainted apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches marketed for children, following reports of illnesses and additional product recalls. Two new companies, Schnucks Markets and Weis Markets, have announced recalls of certain cinnamon applesauce products due to high levels of lead. WanaBana, a Florida-based company, had previously recalled all lots and expiration dates of its apple cinnamon fruit puree. Parents and caregivers are advised not to buy or serve these products, and children who have consumed them should be tested for possible lead poisoning. Lead exposure can have serious health effects, especially in children, and there is no known safe level of lead exposure.
