FDA and CDC Investigate Lead Concerns in Fruit Pouches Sickening Toddlers

The FDA and CDC have issued a warning after at least 22 toddlers in 14 states fell ill from consuming recalled fruit pouches that were found to have elevated levels of lead. The affected products include WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Purée pouches, Schnucks Cinnamon-Flavored Applesauce pouches, and certain Weis cinnamon applesauce pouches. An investigation is underway, and testing has not shown elevated lead levels in non-recalled products. Lead toxicity can have serious effects on children's central nervous system, and parents are advised not to buy or serve the recalled products and to contact their child's healthcare provider for a blood test if their child may have consumed them.
