Former President Donald Trump made a brief appearance on the witness stand in his defense at the civil defamation trial brought by E. Jean Carroll in New York.

The defamation trial between Donald Trump and writer E. Jean Carroll has been postponed after a juror was sent home ill, delaying Trump's testimony. Carroll had accused Trump of forcefully raping her in the 1990s, and the trial has garnered significant attention.

Writer E. Jean Carroll, who accused former President Donald Trump of raping her in the 1990s, was questioned by Trump's lawyer during a civil trial. Carroll maintained that the attack happened while shopping with Trump in a Manhattan department store in 1995 or 1996. Trump's lawyer repeatedly suggested her claim was made up. Carroll acknowledged that she thought disclosing the attack in her book would help sales, but said she was wrong. She said she was inspired to come forward by a New York Times story on sexual misconduct allegations against movie producer Harvey Weinstein. Carroll described the torrent of abuse she's received online echoing Trump's insults about her.

Dominic Pezzola, a member of the Proud Boys indicted on charges of seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol, lashed out at prosecutors from the witness stand, attacking them for conducting what he described as a “corrupt trial” marred by “fake charges.” Pezzola sought to play down the violence of that day, saying that the crowd that forced its way into the building was not “an invading force,” but merely “trespassing protesters.” The trial is now in its fourth month in Federal District Court in Washington, and closing arguments could begin as early as Friday.
