Caltech Achieves World-First Solar Power Transmission from Space to Earth
Scientists at Caltech have successfully completed the first wireless power transfer using the Microwave Array for Power-transfer Low-orbit Experiment (MAPLE), a key technology tested by the Space Solar Power Demonstrator (SSPD-1). The SSPD-1 is part of the Space Solar Power Project (SSPP), which aims to develop space-based solar power (SBSP) technology to collect power 24/7 without interruption. SBSP has the potential to yield eight times more power than solar panels located on Earth's surface and could expand access for underserved communities.
