Rising Distemper in NC Raccoons Poses Threat to Dogs

A wildlife biologist reports an increase in canine distemper cases among raccoons in Buncombe County, North Carolina, but states it is not a high concern. The disease, which can affect various wildlife species, shows symptoms similar to a cold or flu in humans and can lead to neurological issues. While there are no human health risks, pets like dogs and ferrets can be infected, so vaccination and avoiding wildlife contact are advised. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission offers a hotline for reporting unusual animal behavior.

"Daddy Swan Manny's Removal Marks the End for Baby Swans at Manlius Pond"

Manny, a male swan in Manlius, NY, was removed from the Swan Pond after attacking his four cygnets. The cygnets were placed in the pond by a wildlife biologist, but Manny showed aggression towards them. He was captured and taken to a home in Pennsylvania, where he can retire. The future of the cygnets is uncertain, as the DEC is unlikely to allow the breeding program to continue due to mute swans being considered invasive. The village may consider trumpeter swans or apply for a permit to breed adult mute swans.

'Chonkosaurus': The Viral Giant Snapping Turtle of Chicago River

A 60lb giant snapping turtle, dubbed 'Chonkosaurus', was spotted basking on rusting chains in the middle of the Chicago River by kayaker Joey Santore. The female turtle is believed to be 40 to 50 years old and was recently emerged from hibernation. Wildlife biologist Chris Anchor warned that turtles of its size can consume anything they can get their mouth around and people shouldn't disturb them if encountered. The video has amassed more than half a million views on Twitter.
