The UK is shifting to a war footing by investing £1.5 billion to establish 'always-on' munitions factories and bolster its defense industry amid ongoing tensions with Russia and support for Ukraine, aiming to enhance military readiness and stockpile weapons, while facing challenges in meeting defense spending targets and modernizing its armed forces.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has called on allies to increase domestic arms production and remain on a war footing due to depleted weapons stockpiles and a volatile security environment. Stoltenberg emphasized the need for long-term adaptation in the face of a more aggressive Russia, a coercive China, and an unstable world. NATO countries and defense contractors have struggled to meet the demand from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, as well as the pressure to supply arms to Israel. The US is working with industry partners to ramp up production, particularly of high-demand artillery rounds. Stoltenberg stressed the importance of investing to meet Ukraine's needs and strengthen deterrence and defense.
