US Religious Freedom Delegation Abruptly Ends Saudi Visit Over Kippah Controversy

A US religious freedom delegation cut short its visit to Saudi Arabia after a member, Rabbi Abraham Cooper, was asked to remove his kippah at a heritage site. The delegation, from the US Commission on International Freedom, had been invited by the Saudi government and approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. US Religious Freedom Watchdog Urges Biden Administration to Designate India as 'Country of Particular Concern'

The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has called on the Biden administration to designate India as a "country of particular concern" due to its alleged targeting of religious minorities and human rights defenders both within and outside its borders. The USCIRF cited instances of alleged Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatists abroad and the use of spyware and online harassment campaigns against journalists and activists advocating for religious minorities. The USCIRF urged the US government to engage with Indian officials and international partners to ensure religious minorities can live without fear of reprisal. India has expressed concern over the allegations, which it says are contrary to its government's policy.

US religious freedom panel renews call to blacklist India over alleged persecution of minorities.

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has recommended that India be added to a religious freedom blacklist for the fourth year in a row, citing worsening conditions for religious minorities under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. The panel also called on the Biden administration to add Afghanistan, Nigeria, Syria, and Vietnam to its blacklist, and for the redesignation of several countries, including China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Saudi Arabia, for human rights violations. The USCIRF's recommendations are not binding, and there is little expectation that the State Department will adopt them.
