Revolutionary Saliva Substitute Offers Lasting Relief for Dry Mouth

Scientists at the University of Leeds have developed a novel saliva substitute that is four to five times more effective than existing products for relieving dry mouth conditions. The substitute, made of a microgel and a polysaccharide-based hydrogel, binds to the surface of the mouth and hydrates it, providing longer-lasting relief. Laboratory tests showed that the new substance had significantly lower desorption rates compared to commercially available products. The researchers believe that the results will be replicated in human trials and are looking to translate the technology into commercially available products to improve the quality of life for those with dry mouth conditions.

Unveiling the Enigmatic 'Blue Legs' Syndrome: A Long Covid Symptom

Scientists at the University of Leeds have identified a new symptom of long Covid called acrocyanosis, characterized by a rapid purple discoloration on the legs. The 33-year-old patient experienced progressively heavier and tingly legs with a dusky color when standing, but the symptoms disappeared when lying down. This discovery highlights the need for increased awareness of dysautonomia in long Covid and better management of patients experiencing these symptoms. The severity of initial Covid-19 symptoms does not appear to be linked to the chances of developing long Covid.
