North Korea Conducts Successful Test of Underwater Nuclear Drone

North Korea claims to have successfully tested a second type of nuclear-capable underwater attack drone, named "Haeil-2," designed to destroy naval vessels and ports. The test lasted four days and the drone traveled underwater for more than 71 hours before detonating a mock warhead near the eastern port city of Tanchon. The North Korean nuclear threat was discussed by the nuclear envoys of the United States, South Korea, and Japan, who called for stronger international efforts to crack down on illicit North Korean activities funding its weapons program. The envoys expressed concern about North Korea’s cybercrimes and illicit labor exports.

North Korea's Nuclear-Capable Underwater Drone Raises Concerns.

North Korea has claimed to have tested a nuclear-capable underwater attack drone called "Haeil," which can launch a "radioactive tsunami" to destroy naval strike groups or enemy ports. The test was the latest in a series of simulated attacks as Pyongyang escalated its nuclear threats while the United States and South Korea held joint military exercises. Analysts were skeptical about the extent of any new threat, but said the claims showed North Korea's determination to showcase growing capabilities in order to strengthen its hand in dealing with the West. The test was overseen by Kim Jong Un, who expressed his will to make the U.S. and South Korea "plunge into despair."

North Korea Tests 'Nuclear Underwater Attack Drone' During Military Drills with US and South Korea.

North Korea claimed it tested a "nuclear underwater attack drone" this week amid joint US and South Korean military drills. The new underwater weapon is designed to “stealthily infiltrate into operational waters” and target naval striker groups and enemy ports, North Korea claimed. The weapons test came as the US and South Korea wrapped up Freedom Shield 23, a series of military drills around the Korean Peninsula that began on March 11. North Korea also fired multiple strategic cruise missiles from the South Hamgyong province on Wednesday.
