General Motors plans to lay off around 2,750 workers across Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee due to slower EV adoption and regulatory changes, with temporary pauses at battery plants and potential wage support for affected employees, amid declining EV demand and policy shifts.
Cadillac is set to introduce the 2026 Vistiq, a three-row electric SUV that slots between the Lyriq and Escalade IQ in its lineup. Utilizing the Ultium battery platform, the Vistiq offers a 102 kWh battery with a range of at least 300 miles and fast-charging capabilities. Priced at $77,395, it aims to fill the electric niche of the gas-powered XT6 and will be produced in Tennessee starting next year.
General Motors may have found a solution to its Ultium battery project bottlenecks with the addition of Kurt Kelty, a former Tesla battery technology senior director, as the company’s Vice President of Batteries. Kelty's expertise in battery chemistry development and supply chain partnerships is expected to help GM achieve its electrification goals and position the company as a leader in EV technology. The Ultium battery pack project has faced production challenges, leading to delays in launching an effective EV lineup, but Kelty's arrival is seen as a key addition to address these issues and improve the efficiency of producing vehicles on the Ultium platform.
Cadillac is developing an electric version of its best-selling Escalade SUV, called the Escalade IQ, which will be unveiled later this year. The electric SUV will likely use the same BT1 architecture as the GMC Hummer EV and Ultium battery packs and drive units. No other details have been released, but the regular Escalade accounts for about a third of Cadillac's total sales each year, and the electric version is expected to be a big upgrade for the behemoth.
Cadillac has confirmed that the first all-electric Escalade will be released later this year, with no details yet on the Escalade IQ branding. It is expected to be a 2024 model and use GM's Ultium battery technology. Cadillac plans to reveal three new EVs in 2023, including the Escalade IQ. The mid-sized Lyriq SUV has already been released and has received positive reviews for its luxury features and quiet interior.
General Motors is ending production of its electric Chevrolet Bolt due to battery fires that led to a complete model recall. The Bolt was the most affordable electric vehicle on the market and one of only 11 models to qualify for the recently overhauled EV tax credit. Production on both the Chevy Bolt EV and the larger EUV will wrap by the end of 2023, and the Michigan plant where the cars have been manufactured will start producing electric Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks in 2024. The next generation of GM electric vehicles will utilize the company's new Ultium battery.
