Interior Cancels Major Esmeralda 7 Solar Project Amid Renewable Energy Setbacks

The Esmeralda 7 solar power project in Nevada, initially thought to be canceled, is still under review with plans to evaluate each of its seven components separately, despite recent setbacks and political disputes over federal permits and transmission development. The project, which could generate up to 6.2 gigawatts, remains a key part of Nevada's renewable energy future, with potential legal and political maneuvers possibly influencing its fate.

DOE selects National Grid, Berkshire Hathaway, and Grid United for transmission projects with $1.3B support

The Department of Energy (DOE) has selected three transmission projects by National Grid, Berkshire Hathaway, and Grid United, along with their partners, to buy capacity as part of the Transmission Facilitation Program. This program aims to facilitate project financing and improve grid reliability. The selected projects include the Twin States Clean Energy Link, Southline Transmission's first phase, and Cross-Tie. The DOE plans to serve as an "anchor customer" by buying up to half of each project's capacity. Construction on the projects could begin in 2025, with operations expected to start in 2027 and 2028. The projects will deliver affordable clean energy, enhance grid resilience, and benefit rural and underserved communities. The DOE expects to release a second round of funding for the program in the first half of 2024.

DOE Allocates $3.5B to Upgrade U.S. Electric Grid, Including $150M for Michigan Utilities

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced $3.5 billion in awards under its Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships program to support 58 projects in 44 states, making it the largest-ever investment in America's grid. The funding aims to expand and strengthen the nation's electric system, mitigate climate change risks, unlock stranded renewables projects, and improve the flexibility, efficiency, and reliability of the aging power system. The awards include grants for smart grid projects in individual cities and a $464 million investment in five transmission projects across seven Midwest states. The program emphasizes community engagement and benefits, aligning with President Biden's Justice40 initiative.

Biden Administration Advances Renewable Energy Transmission Projects in Nevada

The Bureau of Land Management has advanced two transmission projects proposed by NV Energy that would connect Las Vegas to Reno and Ely to Yerington, facilitating the delivery of eight gigawatts of clean energy to the Western power grid. The projects will help achieve the Biden administration's goal of deploying 25 gigawatts of renewable energy on public lands and waters by 2025 and achieving a carbon-free power sector by 2035. The BLM has approved 35 clean energy projects over the past couple of years, including solar, geothermal, and gen-tie installations, which are anticipated to generate 8,160 megawatts of electricity.
