Cracking the Mystery of Jupiter's Color-Changing Stripes
Scientists from Japan, Spain, and the UK have used data collected by the Juno probe to study Jupiter's magnetic field and have found that the cyclic variations in the planet's alternating bands of dark and light clouds coincide with magnetic oscillations inside the gas world. The team believes that torsional oscillations in Jupiter's magnetic field disrupt the slow convective flows in the deep interior, causing a major disruption to the weather and altering the patterns of upwelling and downwelling in the Jovian clouds. The research has been published in Nature.
