Michigan Republican Congressman Jack Bergman is one of nine candidates running for the GOP nomination for House speaker. He has stated that he would take the job temporarily until a candidate with enough votes to replace him is found. Bergman, a retired lieutenant general in the Marine Corps, emphasizes his military background and ability to be a unifying voice. He has garnered endorsements from several Michigan GOP representatives and is supporting an effort to get all House GOP lawmakers to pledge support for the eventual speaker-designate. The House Republicans are expected to hold a candidates' forum and an internal election by secret ballot this week.

Moderate House Democrats, members of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, have proposed expanding the powers of Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry until a new speaker is elected. Their proposal includes allowing McHenry to bring specific legislation to the House floor, such as emergency foreign aid for Ukraine and Israel, an extension of the continuing resolution to fund the government, and committee work and consideration of spending bills. The Democrats also suggested renewing the expansion of authorities every 15 days. The measure would likely require a bipartisan vote, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has yet to weigh in on the proposal.
