Ukraine's Black Sea ports receive influx of cargo ships

Five more cargo ships are en route to Ukrainian sea ports using a newly opened corridor to resume agricultural exports, as an alternative to the blocked Black Sea grain deal with Russia. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov announced that the vessels, including bulk carriers OLGA, IDA, DANNY BOY, FORZA DORIA, and NEW LEGACY, will export nearly 120,000 metric tons of Ukrainian grain to Africa and Europe. Additionally, three bulk carriers, Azara, Ying Hao 01, and Eneida, have already left Ukrainian ports carrying 127,000 tons of agricultural products and iron ore through a temporary corridor established by the Ukrainian Navy. Russia had closed off the Black Sea ports last year, but they were reopened in July 2022 under a UN and Turkey-brokered deal that Russia later quit, leading to the reimposition of the blockade.

Kremlin Downplays Second Vessel's Passage through Ukraine's Black Sea Corridor

The Kremlin downplayed the significance of a second ship passing through Ukraine's temporary Black Sea corridor, stating that it has no connection to the revival of a grain deal involving Russia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated that the renewal of the grain deal depends on the West fulfilling promises regarding Russia's own grain and fertilizer exports. Russia's grain and fertilizer exports are not subject to Western sanctions, but logistical and financial barriers have hindered shipments. The temporary corridor established by Ukraine aims to release cargo ships trapped in its ports since Russia's military actions in 2022.

Odesa's Temporary Black Sea Corridor Sees Second Vessel Depart

A vessel carrying steel products to Africa has become the second ship to leave Ukraine's Odesa port through a temporary Black Sea corridor, following Russia's withdrawal from a U.N.-brokered deal that allowed for safe grain exports. The Liberian-flagged ship PRIMUS had been blocked at the port since February 2022 and is now sailing through the temporary corridor. Odesa's three seaports had previously shipped large quantities of grain under the U.N.-brokered deal, but Russia's withdrawal prompted Ukraine to establish a "humanitarian corridor" along the western Black Sea coast.
