NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center says Earth is being hit by an S4 solar radiation storm—the largest in more than 20 years—driven by high-speed charged particles from the Sun that could affect satellites, space launches, and polar aviation. Astronauts aboard the ISS are advised to stay in shielded areas, while geomagnetic activity has sparked auroras worldwide.
The Earth is expected to be impacted by a geomagnetic storm caused by solar activity from a coronal hole, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). The storm, categorized as G1 or G2 on the five-point scale, may not result in widespread northern lights displays but could affect navigation, communication, and radio signals. While the storm is not expected to have significant impacts, previous solar storms have caused disruptions to GPS, radio communication, and satellite systems. As the sun approaches the peak of its Solar Cycle 25, more geomagnetic storms and northern lights displays are anticipated in the coming months.
