"Hamas Demands End to Israeli Drone Flights in Gaza Hostage Talks"

Hamas has demanded that Israel stop flying surveillance drones over Gaza as part of the negotiations to pause military operations and free hostages. Israel is unlikely to accept the request as it would hinder their ability to track Hamas operatives and movements. The demand has not been formally rejected or accepted, and negotiations are ongoing. The Pentagon has also been flying American surveillance drones to support hostage rescue efforts. Other sticking points in the negotiations include the duration of the ceasefire and the number of hostages to be released.

US Surveillance Drones Deployed in Gaza for Hostage Recovery

The US military is deploying surveillance drones over Gaza to assist Israel in locating the more than 240 hostages held by Hamas. The drones are part of a surge of intelligence assets sent to the region following the October 7 attack on Israel. In addition to Gaza, US drones were also spotted off the coast of Lebanon, monitoring for any signs of escalation by Iranian proxy forces. The imagery gathered by the drones may have limited effectiveness in locating hostages, as they are believed to be held in underground tunnels. US officials emphasize that the intelligence shared with Israel is focused on hostage recovery and not targeting Hamas leaders. US special operations personnel are advising the Israel Defense Forces on hostage recovery efforts, while the Biden administration has provided lethal aid.

US increases drone surveillance in response to Russian aggression.

The US is flying surveillance drones farther south above the Black Sea after a Russian jet collided with a US drone last week. The drone flights have remained in international airspace, but the US has moved its drone flights farther away from airspace surrounding the Crimean peninsula and eastern portions of the Black Sea. The US is being careful to avoid an incident that could potentially escalate into a direct conflict between US and Russian forces.
