"Urgent Warning: Parents Unknowingly Risking Babies' Lives with Sudden Death Syndrome"

The Lullaby Trust has cautioned parents against allowing babies to sleep in bouncers, swings, or beanbags, as it increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and suffocation. A survey found that many parents let their babies nap in these items, with 8% even allowing overnight sleep. The charity emphasizes that babies are safest sleeping on a flat, firm surface and recommends placing them on their backs with no loose bedding or padded sides. The warning coincides with Safer Sleep Week, aiming to raise awareness about protecting babies' airways during sleep.

The Varied Paths to Justice for Wrongly Convicted Women

Kathleen Folbigg, who was imprisoned for killing her four children 20 years ago, has been pardoned after a rare mutation in a CALM gene was found to have caused the deaths of her two daughters via a rare syndrome called calmodulinopathy. The mutation affects one in 35 million people, and only 135 people worldwide have been known to have it. Folbigg's family is likely to be the only case in Australia. A different mutation could be responsible for the deaths of her two sons.

Uncovering the Mystery of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Scientists have identified potential causes of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in a new study published in the Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology. The study found abnormalities in the 2A/C serotonin receptors responsible for protective sleep functions in the bodies of 70 infants who had died of SIDS. The researchers believe that SIDS is the result of a culmination of the abnormal receptor, developmental timings, and external stressors. The Health Ministry recommends safe-sleep practices, including placing babies on their backs, on a hard mattress, and in their parent's room until the baby is 6 months old.

Biological factors linked to sudden infant death syndrome

Researchers have found that the serotonin 2A/C receptor is altered in sudden infant death cases compared to control cases of infant deaths, supporting the idea that a biological abnormality in some infants makes them vulnerable to death under certain circumstances. The study suggests that sudden infant death syndrome occurs when a child is in a critical period of cardiorespiratory development, faces an outside stressor, and has a biological abnormality that makes them vulnerable to respiratory challenges while sleeping. Safe sleep practices remain critical as there is currently no means to identify infants with biological abnormalities in the serotonergic system.

Uncovering the Biological Factors of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Researchers have found that a particular brain receptor likely involved in helping babies gasp for air was altered in some infants who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The receptor in question is part of the serotonin system, which plays an important role in regulating involuntary body functions like heart rate, breathing and blood pressure. SIDS usually happens during an infant’s sleep, and though it's rare, it's the leading cause of death among babies between one month and one year old in the U.S. No tests exist to reveal whether a baby has an underlying predisposition to SIDS, but parents can lower their baby's risk by following safe sleep guidelines, such as placing sleeping babies on their backs at all times and keeping their sleep area firm, flat, and free of soft toys and bedding.
