Many UK students opt to live at home to save money, with over 700,000 commuters attending universities like Manchester, which has led to dedicated social spaces for them. While commuting involves long travel times and some social limitations, students like Amelka Zambrzycka find the cost savings and benefits to mental health worth the daily journey, though some are considering living closer in the future.
Students at Utah Valley University returned to campus after the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with many creating memorials and trying to support each other as they resume their daily lives and learn to navigate their new reality.
Students are spending significant amounts of money to transform their drab dorm rooms into cozy living spaces, adding to the already soaring costs of college. Some are even hiring interior designers to beautify their limited space. The back-to-college season is big business, with families expected to spend an average of about $1,367 per person, up 14% from last year. However, the stark differences in dorm decorating between those who have money and those who don't can create feelings of imposter syndrome among students. Dorm supplies e-tailer Dormify is offering various bundles of essentials for price-conscious students, as well as an interior designer service for those willing to spend more.
Michigan State University's Board of Trustees has approved a nearly 7% increase in residence hall rates for first-year students this fall due to a 10% increase in gasoline and energy costs and a 25% spike in food prices. The increase will not affect second-year students, who are required to live in campus housing. The university's apartment rates will also increase by 5% and 3% for 1855 Place and Spartan Village, respectively. The increase in food service program costs is purely food-related and doesn't involve labor, according to Vennie Gore, senior vice president for student life and engagement at MSU.
