Imposter posing as Marine sentenced to 6 years in prison.

Sarah Jane Cavanaugh, a Rhode Island woman who posed as a wounded Marine veteran to collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in benefits and charitable contributions, has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison. Cavanaugh, who never served in the military, claimed to be a Purple Heart and Bronze Star-decorated Marine who had been wounded by an IED in Iraq and developed service-related cancer. She was caught after an investigation was launched by the Providence Veteran's Association, and has been ordered to pay back the $284,796.82 she fraudulently obtained.

Sarah Cavanaugh, who posed as a disabled Marine veteran and scammed more than $250,000 from charity groups, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, forged military discharge certificates, and fraudulent use of military records. Cavanaugh used the medical files of real veterans to create her own bogus documents and submitted them to groups such as the Wounded Warrior Project and Code of Support to qualify for financial help. She never served in the military and her scheme "plumbed the depths of moral depravity," according to the prosecutor.

Stolen Valor Conviction Results in 70-Month Prison Sentence for Woman.

Sarah Cavanaugh, an East Greenwich woman, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for falsely claiming to be a wounded Marine veteran and defrauding veterans, charities, friends, and organizations. She pleaded guilty to four counts of wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, forged military discharge certificates, and fraudulent use of military medals. Cavanaugh was also ordered to pay more than $250,000 in restitution. Her crimes prompted the introduction and passage of a stolen valor bill, which makes the act punishable at both the state and federal levels.
