She has made a public apology and plans to donate one million euros to the hospital, but also intends to challenge the fine. Sarah Cavanaugh sentenced to prison for stolen valor in RI case.

Sarah Cavanaugh, who posed as a disabled Marine veteran and scammed more than $250,000 from charity groups, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, forged military discharge certificates, and fraudulent use of military records. Cavanaugh used the medical files of real veterans to create her own bogus documents and submitted them to groups such as the Wounded Warrior Project and Code of Support to qualify for financial help. She never served in the military and her scheme "plumbed the depths of moral depravity," according to the prosecutor.
