High Rates of Genital Herpes Found in Under-50s

A recent survey reveals that over 846 million adults under 50 globally are living with genital herpes, a lifelong sexually transmitted disease caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. The study highlights the psychological and social challenges faced by those affected, including stigma and mental health issues. Despite the high prevalence, researchers note a decline in genital herpes rates, attributing it to increased STI awareness and safer sexual practices. The findings, published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections, emphasize the need for continued public health efforts to manage and reduce the spread of herpes and other STIs.

New York State in Top 5 for STDs

New York State ranks 4th in the US for the most STD cases, with 1,639 cases per 100,000 people and a total of 270,607 STD cases. The highest STD case is HIV prevalence, followed by chlamydia. The high number is due to New Yorkers casually dating and having multiple sexual partners, which they likely find on dating apps like Tinder and Hinge. However, New York ranks amongst the lowest in average yearly increases in STDs since 2015, meaning New Yorkers are taking responsibility and getting tested for STDs and STIs. The CDC recommends testing once a year for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea, and all adults and adolescents from ages 13 to 64 should be tested at least once for HIV.
