7 Must-See Stars in the Native American Night Sky
Indigenous people in North America have been stargazing for thousands of years, and there has been a recent resurgence of interest in indigenous astronomy. The Native Skywatcher's project seeks to revitalize indigenous astronomy through the resurrection of star maps unique to communities including Ojibwe, D/Lakota and Cree. Many indigenous cultures have their own interpretations of constellations, such as the Big Dipper being seen as a husband and wife around a hearth by the Navajo and as a skunk by the Dakota. The Pleiades hold a special place in indigenous astronomy, with dozens of different names across different cultures.
