Google Messages is rolling out several new features and redesigns, including enhanced RCS encryption support, a revamped image viewer, redesigned read receipts, a new account menu, spam link detection, and a Key Verifier tool to combat impersonation scams. Many features are still in beta or gradually being released, with updates to the app's interface and functionality aimed at improving user experience and security.
Truecaller has upgraded its AI Assistant to allow users to create a digital clone of their voice for handling calls. This feature, developed in collaboration with Microsoft, uses Azure AI Speech technology and aims to enhance personalization while maintaining transparency. The rollout is starting in select countries and raises concerns about the potential misuse of voice cloning technology.
Gmail has introduced a new upgrade to its spam filters called RETVec, an AI-powered text classification system that can understand "adversarial text manipulations" such as emails filled with special characters, emojis, typos, and junk characters. This upgrade is considered one of the largest defense upgrades in recent years and aims to tackle spam emails that were previously difficult to classify due to the use of homoglyphs and obscure characters that resemble normal Latin alphabet characters.
Google has announced a major security upgrade for Gmail, implementing a new technique called RETVec (Resilient & Efficient Text Vectoriser) to improve spam detection. RETVec, a multilingual text vectoriser, has significantly enhanced Gmail's spam detection rate by 38% and reduced the false positive rate by 19.4%. It also reduced the model's power usage by 83% and offers faster inference speed. The open source model is available on Github.
Gmail has implemented its "largest defense upgrades in recent years" to enhance spam detection by 38%. The improvements are attributed to the use of RETVec (Resilient & Efficient Text Vectorizer), an open-source approach developed by Google Research. RETVec allows models to achieve state-of-the-art classification performance while reducing computational costs, making it suitable for various use cases. Gmail's implementation of RETVec has not only improved spam detection but also reduced false positive rates and Tensor Processing Unit usage. Google has extensively tested RETVec and found it highly effective for security and anti-abuse applications.
Truecaller is introducing a new update that will provide live caller ID support on iOS, but only for users on its paid tiers. Unlike the seamless experience available on Android, the iPhone experience will involve a step that requires interacting with Siri. To use the new feature, Truecaller subscribers on an iPhone running on iOS 16 or above will be able to access live caller ID support by saying, “Hey Siri, Search Truecaller.” The feature leverages Apple’s Siri Shortcuts and App Intents to offer the anticipated live caller ID experience.
