Remco Evenepoel withdrew from the Tour de France on stage 14 after struggling on the Col du Tourmalet, marking a setback for Soudal-QuickStep as they lose their race leader amid challenging conditions.
Mikel Landa becomes the second Soudal-QuickStep GC leader to crash out of the Itzulia Basque Country race, following Remco Evenepoel's exit, after suffering a broken collarbone in a crash at the foot of the Urkiola climb.
Julian Alaphilippe won stage 2 of the Critérium du Dauphiné in an uphill bunch sprint, his first WorldTour win in 14 months. Richard Carapaz finished second, with Trek-Segafredo’s Natnael Tesfatsion in third. Christophe Laporte remained on top of the overall classification. Alaphilippe's win represents a notable drop in pressure for the former double World Champion after his challenging start to 2023 and a 2022 campaign blighted by crashes.
Remco Evenepoel, one of the favourites for victory at the Giro d'Italia, has left the race due to testing positive for COVID-19. Soudal-QuickStep manager Patrick Lefevere defended Evenepoel's decision to abandon the race, stating that there should be no risks taken by teams when a rider tests positive. Evenepoel's COVID-19 positive perhaps explained his below par performance during the hilly stage to Fossombrone and in Sunday's time trial to Cesena.
Remco Evenepoel, the leader of the Giro d'Italia, has been forced to withdraw from the race after testing positive for COVID-19. The Belgian cyclist had won two stages and held the pink jersey for three days before being forced to leave. Evenepoel's Soudal-QuickStep team announced that all other riders and staff members had tested negative. Geraint Thomas is now set to wear the maglia rosa when the race restarts after the rest day.
Julian Alaphilippe added two hours of training onto his already four-hour ride at Dwars door Vlaanderen in a bid to find form for the Tour of Flanders. Despite placing 29th, Alaphilippe attempted to open the race on berg Ten Houte but found his gears jammed and had to drift back. He spent the rest of the day pulling a chasing bunch in aid of Davide Ballerini, who ended up seventh. Alaphilippe said it did him good to "make some hard efforts" and seemed excited rather than fazed by the prospect of a 273km Tour of Flanders on Sunday.
