Inspiring Kenyan Stargazer Empowers Children to Explore the Sky

Susan Murabana, a Kenyan stargazer, is inspiring children in underserved communities by bringing astronomy education to them through her social enterprise, Travelling Telescope. With just a telescope and a mobile inflatable planetarium, Murabana and her husband aim to give children the opportunity to see Saturn, the moon, and constellations while teaching them basic science and astrophysics. Their goal is to inspire more Kenyans to be involved in the space industry and create a generation of informed leaders who can protect our planet. Murabana also aims to combat the perception that astronomy is solely a Western science and wants to highlight the rich history of astronomy in Africa.

Solar Power Brings Life-Changing Benefits to Remote Villages.

Off-grid solar systems are bringing limited access to electricity to some of the world's most remote places, providing more hours in the day, more money, and more social gatherings. In Laindeha, Indonesia, villagers are using small, individual solar panel systems to power light bulbs and charge cellphones, allowing them to continue working and studying after dark. While Indonesia has brought electricity to millions of people in recent years, there are still more than half a million people living in places the grid doesn't reach. Grassroots organizations like Sumba Sustainable Solutions are working to provide imported home solar systems to these communities, which can power light bulbs and charge cellphones for monthly payments equivalent to $3.50 over three years.

In Indonesia, grassroots social enterprise projects have brought small, individual solar panel systems to remote villages, providing much-needed extra income and allowing children to study at night. While barriers still remain, experts say off-grid solar programs on the island could be replicated across the vast archipelago nation, bringing renewable energy to remote communities. However, off-grid solar projects face hurdles, including the need for subsidies and imported parts, and the difficulty of collecting payments from recipients.

While Indonesia has brought electricity to millions of people in recent years, there are still more than half a million people living in places the grid doesn’t reach. Grassroots social enterprise projects have brought small, individual solar panel systems to villages like Laindeha and across the island of Sumba, providing clean electricity directly to those who are unelectrified. While barriers still remain, experts say off-grid solar programs on the island could be replicated across the vast archipelago nation, bringing renewable energy to remote communities.
