California Considers Mandating Speed-Limiting Devices in New Cars
A new bill in the California Senate, proposed by Sen. Scott Wiener, aims to require speed governors in vehicles sold in the state starting in 2027, using GPS technology or cameras to limit speeds to 10 mph over the speed limit. The bill, part of a package called SAFER on California Streets, also includes requirements for underride guardrails on trucks. While proponents argue that the measure will reduce traffic injuries and deaths, it is likely to face opposition from trucking groups and those who believe increased police presence is a better solution.
