Rani, a 27-year-old Asian elephant at the Saint Louis Zoo, died unexpectedly. Initial results from the necropsy showed pre-existing changes in her heart. The agitation caused by a loose dog outside the enclosure led to Rani's collapse, despite emergency care efforts. Rani was a beloved member of the elephant family and will be greatly missed.
The Saint Louis Zoo plans to invest $40 million into Destination Discovery, a new family-friendly experience at the former site of the Children’s Zoo, which will consist of several new animal habitats and different engagement sessions and activities planned for children and families. The zoo hopes to begin construction next year and open for good by 2026. The Henry A. Jubel Foundation donated $15 million toward the cause and will have naming rights for Destination Discovery.
The Saint Louis Zoo has been voted the 8th best zoo in the United States by USA Today readers. The zoo is known for being free to the public and is located in Forest Park, which was voted Best City Park in the U.S. in 2022 and 2023 by the 10Best USA Today Readers' Choice Awards. Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska, took the No. 1 spot in the readers' poll. The Saint Louis Zoo is home to more than 16,000 animals of 500 different species and has its origins in the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.
