Critics raise concerns over safety of weighted infant sleepwear

Doctors and safe sleep advocates are warning about the potential dangers of weighted sleepwear for infants. While some companies claim that weighted infant sleepwear can reduce anxiety and have a soothing effect, critics argue that the added weight could make it harder for infants to breathe, pump blood, and move around. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against using weighted swaddles and sleep products for infants, citing safety concerns. There are currently no universal standards or research on the safety or efficacy of weighted infant sleepwear. Advocates are calling for the creation of a voluntary standard for wearable infant sleep products, including weighted sleepwear, to ensure the safety of babies.

Federal warning issued as Boppy lounger linked to multiple infant deaths

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned parents to stop using recalled Boppy newborn loungers, which have been linked to at least 10 infant deaths. The loungers may cause infants to suffocate if they roll, move, or are placed on the lounger in a position that obstructs breathing, or roll off the lounger onto an external surface. Although the loungers can no longer be sold legally, they have still been available online through social media sites. The CPSC and Boppy are recommending anyone with Boppy newborn loungers to stop using them immediately and request instructions on how to dispose of them and ask for a refund from The Boppy Company through their website. The CPSC also reminded parents to set up a safe sleep environment for children.

Possible cause for SIDS discovered by scientists.

A new study suggests that some of the unexplained deaths of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) may be caused by an abnormality in the medulla, which connects the brain stem and the spinal cord. The study found abnormalities in a particular receptor in the medulla oblongata, part of the lower brain stem that regulates autonomic and respiratory function, in a subset of SIDS infants. Babies with this abnormality are at greater risk in unsafe sleep conditions, such as prone sleep and bedsharing, when the levels of oxygen around the infant’s airway may be lower than normal. Safe sleep habits, such as putting babies to sleep on their backs on a firm, flat surface, are key to prevention.
