Poland's Renaming of Kaliningrad Sparks Kremlin Fury
Poland has officially changed the name of the Russian city of Kaliningrad to Krolewiec on Polish maps, citing its cultural heritage and the responsibility of Mikhail Kalinin, after whom the city was named, for the death of 21,000 Polish prisoners of war in 1940. The Kremlin has slammed the move as "madness" and evidence of Russophobia, with Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, saying it demonstrated Poland's "hatred of the Russians." Political tensions have soared between Poland and Russia during the war in Ukraine.
