Germany has rejected Mali's military junta's request for the United Nations peacekeeping force to leave the country "without delay," calling it politically motivated. Berlin still aims for an orderly withdrawal of its troops by May 2024. Mali's interim military authorities made the request on Friday, citing a "crisis of confidence" between Malian authorities and the decade-long UN mission known as MINUSMA. MINUSMA was deployed by the UN Security Council in 2013 to support foreign and local efforts to restore stability.

Former Wagner Group member on trial for bar brawl in Norway.

Andrey Medvedev, a former member of the Russian private military contractor Wagner Group seeking asylum in Norway, has admitted to charges of resisting arrest after a bar brawl and carrying an air gun. He denied using violence against police officers who handcuffed him outside an Oslo pub in February. Medvedev, who fears for his life if he returns to Russia, fled to Norway earlier this year, crossing illegally over its border with Russia. He has said he is willing to testify about any war crimes he witnessed and denied participating in any himself.
