A line of Starlink satellites from SpaceX's internet satellite network will be visible in Middle Tennessee for four minutes on Monday evening. Starlink aims to provide internet access in rural areas or places with unstable ground-based internet by deploying satellites in a constellation pattern at a low-earth orbit. With over 4,500 satellites currently in orbit, these blinking lights may become a more common sight.
The Biden-Harris Administration has announced nearly $700 million in grants and loans through the ReConnect Program to connect rural residents, farmers, and business owners in 22 states and the Marshall Islands to reliable and affordable high-speed internet. This funding is part of the Administration's efforts to connect all communities in the United States to high-speed internet and rebuild the economy. The investments will support economic growth, create jobs, and benefit rural communities that have long struggled to access government programs and funding. The projects include grants to benefit communities in North Carolina, Oregon, and New Mexico, among others. The ReConnect Program aims to provide high-speed internet service to rural areas lacking access and requires applicants to commit to building facilities capable of providing high-speed internet to every location in the proposed service area.
