Paris 2024 Olympic Open Water Test Event Canceled Due to Seine River Pollution

The Open Water Swimming World Cup event in Paris, which also serves as a test run for the Paris 2024 Olympics, has been postponed due to poor water quality in the River Seine caused by heavy rainfall. The women's 10km race has been rescheduled for Sunday, along with the men's 10km. The decision was made in consultation with public health authorities and event partners. Paris 2024 organizers are working on measures to address pollution in the river before the Olympics next summer.

"Paris Reopens Seine River for Swimmers After a Century"

Paris is preparing to bring back swimming events in the River Seine for the 2024 Olympic Games, after a ban of nearly 100 years due to pollution. The city has been working on a long-term plan to clean up the river, including disinfection units and improving water quality. While efforts have already shown positive results, some locals remain skeptical about the water's safety. From 2025, the public will have access to designated swimming areas along the Seine, with additional potential sites identified in the greater Paris region. The initiative is part of Paris' broader efforts to adapt to climate change and enhance biodiversity in the city.

Paris' River Seine Gets Olympic Makeover for Safe Swimming

The River Seine in Paris, once too toxic for most fish and swimmers, is undergoing a costly and complex cleanup in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The cleanup includes improving sewage treatment plants, going after homes upstream of Paris and houseboats on the Seine that were emptying their sewage and wastewater directly into the river, and investing in huge storage basins and other public works that will reduce the need to spill bacteria-laden wastewater into the Seine untreated when it rains. The water quality is already improving, and the river should reopen to everyone in the summer of 2025.
