DeSantis vs. Disney: The Battle Continues

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has promised "very, very strong action" against Disney in response to an agreement that strips power from the new district overseeing Disney World property. The agreement was made by the old governing body, the Reedy Creek Improvement District, just before it was dissolved by DeSantis and Republican lawmakers. The new Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board discovered the agreement, which binds it to the RCID comprehensive plan and land development regulations, and gives more power to Disney. DeSantis has ordered an investigation and said all options are on the table, including dissolving the binding agreement and implementing taxes or tolls. Disney's CEO has criticized DeSantis for punishing the company for exercising its constitutional right to freedom of speech.

DeSantis vs. Disney: Hotel taxes and tolls on the table

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis plans to void the Reedy Creek deal with Disney and consider imposing new hotel taxes and tolls on Disney World. DeSantis called the entertainment giant a "joke" and accused it of acting like it had pulled one over on the state. Democrats accused DeSantis of wanting to increase costs for working-class Floridians. The Legislature passed a bill in February that stripped the company of control of the special Reedy Creek district after more than 50 years and allowed DeSantis to appoint its board.

Disney vs. DeSantis: The Power Struggle Continues.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has promised more action in the state's ongoing battle with Disney over control of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, home to Walt Disney World. Last year, the state revoked Disney's authority to build, tax and develop the area, but it emerged this week that Disney may have outmaneuvered the state for control of the 27,000-acre site. DeSantis appointed new members to the Reedy Creek board in February, but it seems the previous board voted control to Disney in ways that may be complicated to overturn. Disney maintains that all agreements were appropriate and approved in open, public forums.

Disney's Last-Minute Power Grab Leaves Reedy Creek Board Handicapped

Disney made a last-minute deal with the former Reedy Creek board in February, giving the company wide powers and approval to build more theme parks, according to a special council hired by the new Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board. The deal also bars the new tourism board from making changes to properties without Disney's approval. Board member Ron Peri said the agreement essentially makes Disney the government, and the board has very little power to govern beyond maintaining roads and basic infrastructure. The board sought to hire legal counsel to potentially challenge Disney in court.

Disney's Power Play: Handicapping the Reedy Creek Board.

Disney executives and attorneys signed a development agreement with the Reedy Creek improvement district’s board that allowed the company maximum developmental power over its territory for the next 30 years, effectively poisoning the authority of the incoming members appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. The agreement allows Disney the maximum possible density and building heights inside Walt Disney World, and other property owners will need Disney’s permission to expand within the district. Board members and their attorneys called the agreement insane and extreme, and said its sheer scale should make it null and void. A legal battle is expected to ensue.
