INDYCAR has scheduled a special 15-minute practice session on Thursday for the No. 24 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Chevrolet and the No. 44 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda after a practice incident on Monday. The session will allow unlimited install laps but the teams will not be allowed to cross the start-finish line and the Yard of Bricks. The 107th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 28.
Stefan Wilson will not race in the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 after suffering a fractured vertebra in a crash with Katherine Legge during Monday's practice session. Wilson was driving for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and qualified 25th. Legge, driving for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, qualified for her third Indy 500 safely in 30th. Both cars were damaged in the crash, but RLL will not run its backup car and instead choose to fix the oval car in time for Friday's "Carb Day" final practice session. Dreyer & Reinbold have not yet announced who will replace Wilson.
Jack Harvey secured his place in the Indianapolis 500 with the final run of the day, bumping his way into the field of 33 and knocking out teammate Graham Rahal. Engineer Allen McDonald praised Harvey's determination and positivity, despite struggling with balance and speed throughout the month of May.
Graham Rahal was bumped from the Indy 500 field by his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing teammate Jack Harvey by just 0.0044s over the four-lap run. Rahal suffered a weightjacker failure during the session, but his first run was good for third behind teammate Christian Lundgaard and Dale Coyne Racingâs rookie Sting Ray Robb. Harvey's average speed of 229.166mph just pipped Rahalâs 229.159mph.
Despite missing out on a podium finish, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing had plenty of reasons to be proud after recording its most competitive NTT IndyCar Series event across all three of its entries in more than a year. Christian Lundgaard finished fourth after a tire strategy that played into the hands of race winner and new championship leader Alex Palou. Lundgaard and Palou went in opposite directions with their usage of Firestoneâs primary and alternate tires. Pato OâWard of Arrow McLaren was third. The only major adversity was an engine failure in Helio Castroneves' No. 06 Honda. Qualifying is up next.
