"Global Failure: Lack of Progress in Returning Nazi-Looted Art Revealed in New Report"

A report by the World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO) reveals that over half of the countries endorsing the Washington Principles have made "little or no progress" in returning Nazi-looted art in the 25 years since the principles were drafted. While some countries have made major or substantial progress, many have not conducted historical research on restitution, looked into the provenance of their collections, or established a process for claims. The report also highlights the need for transparency, improved provenance research, and facilitating restitution claims, especially for private collectors. The release of the report coincided with an event in New York where the US Secretary of State endorsed best practices in art and cultural-property restitution, marking the first governmental document on Holocaust restitution to be endorsed in nearly 15 years.

"Infamous Hitler-Looted Painting Up for Auction"

A painting by Frans Francken the Younger, believed to have been stolen by the Nazis, is set to be sold at auction. Titled "Sermon on the Mount," the 17th-century artwork was once owned by Adolf Hitler and was later looted during the chaotic final days of World War II. Despite extensive research, the prewar owner of the painting remains unknown, leaving the rightful heirs unable to be identified. Provenance research has become more advanced in recent years, but cases like this highlight the challenges of tracing the ownership history of looted art, particularly in the context of the Holocaust. The auction house hopes that a public institution or museum will purchase the painting to raise awareness and ensure its accessibility.

Met Museum Implements Plan to Recover Looted Art from Collections After Seizures.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced a new effort to review its collection and policies with the aim of returning items with problematic histories. The museum will hire a four-person provenance research team to review its holdings for works with tainted histories. The Met has been facing increasing calls to repatriate works that law enforcement officials and foreign governments say it has no right to. The museum's stature and the scope of its effort is likely to affect how other institutions grapple with the increasing pressure to return ancient items that bear evidence of having been looted.

Nazi-Looted Silver Finds Its Way Back to Museums.

German museums are returning silver objects that were confiscated or pawned from Jews during the reign of the Third Reich. While much attention has been given to the looting of fine art, less has been said about the theft of more prosaic valuables. Several German museums are now quietly engaged in a determined effort to return these items, under an initiative started in recent years. The search for heirs who have claims to the silver items is also underway at additional museums and archives in Munich, Stuttgart, Berlin and Hamburg.
