Stem Cells Combat Aging by Clearing Out Trash.

Scientists at UC San Diego have discovered that stem cells use a unique method to discard misfolded proteins, which decreases with age and could be a key factor in age-related illnesses. The study focused on hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which produce new blood and immune cells throughout our lives. The researchers found that HSCs use a different system to dispose of damaged and misfolded proteins, called aggrephagy, which involves collecting and trafficking them into clusters called aggresomes before being collectively destroyed by the lysosome. Boosting this specialized garbage disposal system could help preserve stem cell fitness during aging and mitigate blood and immune disorders.

Insights into Aging from Stem Cell 'Junk Yards'

Stem cells in our blood play a crucial role in keeping our bodies healthy, but their performance dips as we age. Stem cells manage their waste by storing misfolded proteins in one place, collecting them into piles, like mini junk yards, and later disintegrating them with a different protein complex called an aggresome. However, this waste management system breaks down with age, leading to a decline in stem cell function and the diseases associated with those changes. Researchers believe that drugs that can maintain this control for stem cells could prevent the decline in stem cell function and the diseases that are associated with those changes.

Stem Cells' Trash Removal Key to Fighting Aging.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine found that blood stem cells use an unexpected method to remove misfolded proteins, and that this pathway’s activity degrades with age. The study focused on hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), the cells in our bone marrow that produce new blood and immune cells throughout our lives. The authors say boosting this specialized garbage disposal system called aggrephagy could help protect against age-related diseases.
