Uganda's anti-LGBTQ law condemned by World Bank for violating values
The World Bank has announced that it will suspend new lending to the Ugandan government due to its anti-LGBTQ law, which the bank believes contradicts its values. The bank conducted an assessment and concluded that additional measures were necessary to ensure projects align with its environmental and social standards. The existing portfolio will continue to disburse funds, but new lending will be put on hold. The International Finance Corporation and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency will proceed with private sector projects on a selective basis, implementing measures to ensure inclusion and non-discrimination. The World Bank's decision comes after pressure from civic groups urging action against the Ugandan law, which carries the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality."
