Rabies Outbreak: Bats Test Positive in Multiple Counties

Three residents in Rome, New York, are receiving post-exposure treatment after a bat tested positive for rabies. The Oneida County Health Department advises residents to be cautious if they find a bat in their home and offers guidance on safely capturing and testing the bat. Bats are the leading cause of rabies deaths in the United States, and residents are encouraged to "bat proof" their homes by sealing potential entry points. The health department also reminds people that bat bites or scratches can be undetectable, and it is important to seek medical attention if there is a possibility of exposure. A rabies vaccine clinic for pets will be held on October 19.

Rabies Claims Lives Despite Treatment: Recent Cases in US and India

The man was bitten by a bat and received timely and appropriate care, including a series of vaccinations and human rabies immunoglobulin injections. However, he died within 15 days of experiencing severe pain on the right side of his face, which progressed to numbness in his face and right hand, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. The man had an unrecognized immune deficiency that probably contributed to the failure of the treatment.
