Pope John Paul II, the third-longest serving pope, died on April 2, 2005, at the age of 84. He survived an assassination attempt in 1981 and made over 100 international apostolic journeys during his papacy. He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years and was devoted to the visions and message of Polish mystic St. Faustina Kowalska.
